Young Township was formed from parts of Blacklick and
Conemaugh townships in 1830. Although many of the residents identified themselves as
farmers, some of the other occupations listed are stonemason, shoemaker, spinster,
cabinetmaker, and blacksmith. An occupation no longer practiced today is that of Elizabeth
Elder, listed here as a "mantua maker." A mantua was, a loose-fitting
garment worn especially in the 17th and 18th
centuries. Also note the listed occupation on the third line from the top of James Brunson. A
"molato" (mulato) is a person having one white and one black parent. This is only a
partial listing for 1807.
