Baseball was very popular in McIntyre and other coal mining communities. The Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Company sponsored baseball leagues which were composed of players from their respective coal mining company towns. During the baseball season special treatment was given to those players who worked in the mines. The Coal Company also actively recruited workers who were good ball players.
