Above-Ground Mine Workers

In addition to those who worked underground, other mine workers held a variety of above-ground occupations. Those that did so might have special skills or be unable to work in the mines because of claustrophobia. Examples of above-ground workers, from left to right, are shop maintenance men, watchman, and blacksmith. The photos are from the early 1940s.
