Coal Company Letter Indicating Priority of Baseball, 1930

This response from the General Superintendent of the Coal Company, to a suggestion made by an employee on the need to establish first-aid classes in every mining town, is a testament to the importance that was placed on baseball  by, not only the miners, but by the managers of the Coal Company. Miners who were good ball players were frequently given preferential treatment, in particular, the day before a ball game. Note the last sentence; it has been highlighted to make it more readable. Within a few years, the Boy Scouts in McIntyre established a First Aid-Team.
