Three Generations on Steps of Double Outhouse

Outhouses were typical in rural America and McIntyre before and during the first part of the 20th century. Today they are a relic of past history and tend to engender humor when mentioned. Indoor bathrooms were a luxury that few townspeople could afford. This photo, from the early 1930s, shows three generations sitting on the steps of a double outhouse structure. After 1947, a number of McIntyre residents purchased the homes that they had previously rented and one of the improvements was the installation of indoor bathrooms.
