Mechanical Loader

Miners worked in dark, dirty, and sometimes dangerous situations. Note the miner on his back and wearing a helmet with lamp. Also note the low bituminous coal ceiling. This was referred to as "low coal." The date of the photo is unknown although it is probably from the late 1930s or early 1940s. It is not certain whether this is from a McIntyre mine; however, it is from one of the Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Company mines.
