Children in Communion Dress, Circa 1940
A group of children, circa 1940, pose for the camera
after receiving their first communion at St. Gertrude's Catholic Church in McIntyre.
The significance placed on this ritual in the life of a Catholic child was reenforced
by newspaper coverage which listed the names of the children and described the
event. Special flowers on the altar and at the church entrance made the day
memorable for the children. A post communion breakfast was usually served to
the children by the women of St. Gertrude's guild.
