Company Houses With Gardens On Hill
Identical
rows of company-built houses doted McIntyre as illustrated in this photo
from the early 1940s. Typical of the many company towns in western
Pennsylvania, the town also had a company store which can be seen in the
background to the left at the end of the railroad tracks. Although most families
had a garden on their small plots, raising fruits and vegetables was especially
encouraged during World War II. These gardens were called "Victory
Gardens."
