Miner and Young Daughter, 1945

A coal miner leaning against a clothesline takes time to pose with his young daughter in their yard. The lorry tracks are located on top of the coal hill in the background. The lorry was an open vehicle which transported men into the mines.

Although coal was still mined underground, beginning in the mid-1940s, deep mine seams were becoming exhausted and strip-mining started to be employed.
