Early Hand Tools
The pick and the shovel were two of the earliest
tools used by miners. Before mechanization, mules or horses were used in
some mines as beasts of
burden to carry coal to the surface. However, there is no memory by former
elderly miners of animals being used in either of the two McIntyre mines.
