View of Town With Union Hall in Background
This
1940s photo is a partial view of the downtown area. The
Union Hall, the large dark gray structure visible in the background on the left, was
located on the main thoroughfare. Union meetings, dances, movies, dinners, and other social activities
took place there. A partial view of a rock dump can be seen to the left in the
background. Rock dumps were ubiquitous in coal mining towns since slag or waste
from coal mining operations had to be disposed near the mines.
