Family and Town Life

.
Miners' wives usually did not work outside the home although they were industrious and busy raising families and doing household chores. Family income was generally low and frugality was practiced daily. In 1918 a pandemic flu devastated hundreds of town residents. Gardens were kept and the produce was canned or stored. Housewives used plants and other home remedies for certain illnesses. A number of families kept chickens, pigs, and even cows on their small lots. Meals reflected the ethnic heritage of a family. Weddings, funerals, and other major life events were often occasions when town residents came together to contribute food and support of various kinds to their friends, families, and neighbors.
