McIntyre, located in Young Township,
Indiana County, was formed in 1830 from parts of two contiguous townships,
Conemaugh and Blacklick. In the late 18th and 19th centuries early settlers and immigrants
to this area were
primarily from the British Isles. Later immigrants, primarily from
eastern and southern Europe, settled in western Pennsylvania to work in the
newly developing coal mines. The Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal and Iron Company was
the largest coal mining company in Indiana county in the early
part of the 20th century. It established many coal mining company
towns in Indiana and other nearby counties, some of which still stand today
although greatly changed.
